The Dublin Area Rapid Transit system (DART) is an electrified commuter rail railway network serving the coastline and city of Dublin, Ireland. The service makes up the core of Dublin’s suburban railway network, stretching from Greystones, County Wicklow, in the south to Howth and Malahide in north County Dublin. The DART serves 31 stations and consists of 53 route kilometers of electrified railway and carries in the region of 20 million passengers per year. In a similar manner to the Berlin S-Bahn, the DART blends elements of a commuter rail service and a rapid transit system.

DART Commuter Rail Frequency

DART Frequency:

  • Monday-Friday: From 6.50am to 8pm, there is a DART train every 10 minutes on the Howth to Bray section of the line. Expect trains every 15-20 minutes on weekdays.
  • Saturday: On Saturday trains are usually every 15 minutes on the Howth-Bray section.
  • Sunday: Expect a train every 30 minutes. However, it is advisable to check the timetable before traveling on DART on Sunday.
  • DART services to Malahide, Portmarnock, Clongriffin or Greystones: Services to these stations run less frequently (approximately every 30 minutes).

Commuter Frequency:

  • Services are frequent on most routes (with trains every 20-30 minutes), usually between 6am and 9am,

Note: There are exceptions – particularly in the case of the South East passenger service – with occasional large gaps between trains outside peak hours.

  • Dublin Longford Commuter service extends from Dublin’s Pearse Station via Dublin’s Connolly Station to Longford.
  • Dublin Dunboyne / M3 Parkway services extends from Dublin’s Dockland/ Connolly Station via Clonsilla to Dunboyne/ M3 Parkway.
  • Dublin Southern Commuter service operates from Dublin’s Connolly Station to Gorey Station.
  • Mallow – Cork – Cobh – Midleton Commuter services extends from Mallow to Cork, Cork to Cobh or Midleton.
  • Phoenix Park Commuter services operate from Portlaoise through the Phoenix Park Tunnel to terminate in Grand Canal Dock.
